🧙 What is cosplay?
🧙♂️ Cosplay is a form of performance art. Participants are known as cosplayers, who wear costumes and fashion accessories to portray specific fictional characters, celebrities, idols or concepts.
🧙 The word "cosplay" itself originates from the Japanese portmanteau "kosupure" (コスプレ), combining the words "costume" and "play". The term was coined in Japan in 1984, inspired by fans wearing costumes at science fiction conventions. In the United States, this hobby was traditionally referred to as "costuming", tracing back to the "futuristic costume" created by Myrtle R. Douglas for the first World Science Fiction Convention in New York City in 1939. Douglas’s costume created a stir among attending fans, and from then on, costuming became an integral part of fan conventions.
